Diving common seal drawn by Grace
Common (or harbour) seals are cute looking mammals. They usually live collectively around the coast, basking on beaches for much of the day. Every so often a lone seal or a pair ventures from the sea through Yarmouth into Broadland rivers. This isn't so very unusual as seals can travel great distances to hunt for fresh fish.
One young seal came up the River Bure in spring this year. Could they be seeking fish of differing flavours...
Phoca vitulina is the scientific Greco~Latin name for common seals, meaning calf~like seals.
