The vanishing Hoveton eel man
Ever since the first humans set foot in this watery district, stories have abounded of magical and spooky occurrences on the ancient, winding rivers.
Sometime in the middle of the last century a local eel fisherman kept a hut and boats upstream of the railway bridge ~ around the old brickworks moorings (by the railway station, down by the board walk and edge of the 24 hour moorings).
'The owd chaps told the tale that he got lost in the marshes the other side of the bridge somewhere ~ and they could hear him calling but could not locate him.'
Never again was the eel man seen. Later on, his cabin boat was moved round to a little broad and there the spectral looking remains can still be seen, for those who care to look.
As told by Morris, after John Knowlittle
