HEATHER

Welcome to Heather

Houseboat of character, docked in Hoveton by the River Bure on the Norfolk Broads Waterways.

Heather is cared for by a partnership of friends and family. Our aim is to preserve the distinctive style of the houseboat and enable future generations to enjoy her charms.

Explore the riverside, browse the shops and places to eat and drink ~ and much more beyond monumental Wroxham Bridge.

Baking authentic ship's biscuits ~ eternal bread

We tried a very old original recipe for biscuits, once eaten aboard ships in the days of sail. The ingredients are simple and minimal ~ designed to produce a wholesome staple food that lasts. On long voyages, before modern galley facilities 'hardtack' biscuits were a replacement for bread. The biscuits are so tough some supremely well preserved examples are found in museum collections around the world. Modern day versions of ship's biscuits can be found in packets of water biscuits, cream crackers and the like.

Heather's ship's biscuits were made with a duck shaped biscuit cutter and only took half an hour to bake in a moderately heated oven. They can be hard to bite, but are very good to dunk in soup, broth or hot chocolate.

Coming soon ~ you will be able to call by for your very own dunking duck!
