Mute swans are symbolic of the Upper River Bure. The splendid colony of birds even have an affinity with humankind.
As pleasure boating took off in Wroxham and Hoveton in the 1900s, refreshments and souvenirs began to be produced ashore for the new visitors or tourists. Often these new shops would be made in the front room of simple cottages clustering by the road bridge. Alternatively timber sheds would be built as premises.
The survival of this decorative Wroxham Norfolk Broads horse brass, sold as a lucky souvenir and probably made between the two world wars is testament to the general quality of design and manufacture of merchandise at the time.
