Gory nature on the riverside ~ trails of slime

Can you imagine a creature that is nimble enough to move seemingly without effort and climb a vertical surface; yet has no arms or legs - it probably sounds really impressive, right. Well if I described that same creature as slimy, dull coloured and likely to eat any prized vegetables or ornamental herbaceous plants, you might agree... as I'm talking about slugs. Oddly enough slugs, although looking more primative that snails, have an advantage by not having a shell. This enables them to live underground, and as slugs also dislike sunlight, they do sound like something from the Underworld. On a more positive note slugs are an essential source of food, particularly for thrushes and hedgehogs, as they are a major part of their diet, giving them an important place in the biodiversity of our natural world.
