For Hallowe'en (Samhain) season we're looking at a sequence of gory and sureal creatures and other creepy things found in the natural world around the riverside.
πΈWhat is that...? a pumpkin spider... hmm... well on first glance, to the casual observer it might well be described as such. The much less interesting title of ' Common Garden Spider' which doesn't really sound exciting, is even less so when compared to its Latin name Araneus Diadematus, meaning 'Spider adorned with a crown' which certainly sounds far more glamarous. If you dare take a closer look at these ornately patterned spider, note the shape on its back is often a diamond or crown shape, set against an array of hues from a fairly pumpkin orange, copper, gold, through to dark brown - they also have banded legs in similar colours, adding to the overall effect. And the 'bling' does stop there - I dare you to leave your cosy bed on a frosty morning and take a look around as you'll likely see these spiders as they wait patiently sitting like a jewel enthroned at the centre of a glistening orb web beautifully highlighted by morning dew.
