Looks can be deceptive... beautiuous yellow and white water lilies with attentant shiny green pads (Nymphaea Alba) are a joy to see. They also have the distinction of being Britain's only native aquatic lily. However, under the surface the roots rear their ugly features. Thick tendrils of mottled whitish yellow branches sprawl out in varying lengths.
Vegetation can become a menace to mariners in high summer. Weed cutters often have no option but to chop up the plants. In the aftermath odd chunks of root float away. The offcuts can resemble extra terrestrial creatures from the works of science fiction.
