Peter the pigeon lover ~ in memoriam

Many will remember the avuncular presence of Peter who regulary visited Hoveton. Peter was a kindly gentleman who spent many happy hours feeding seed to the pigeons on Granary Square ~ and conversing with all kinds of people. On one occasion he got chatting to a distinguished party of Arabs who had enjoyed a successful day at Newmarket races and promptly invited him to a fine luncheon at Hotel Wroxham.

We were very sad to learn that Peter had passed away. His wisdom, modesty and humour were a breath of fresh air against a backdrop of some knavish politics of the village and indeed the nation. Stories of his life were often shared, including service in the Parachute Regiment. There were also amusing and incredible anecdotes about Cambridge University scholars ~ from Peter's younger days when his mother kept a boarding house in the fenland citadel ~ shades of Tom Sharpe's Porterhouse Blue.
