Swandays

As elements of Hoveton hibernate in the quieter winter months, the waterfowl continue with their usual daily routines.

Three mute swans were saved in the area around the bridge. A mature mute swan was wandering down the High Street from the crossroads with Church and Station Roads. The Oh Crumbs team saw the bird and herded him back through the latch gate at Granary Staithe to the river. Christine thinks with all the ashen skies and driving rain, the swan may have confused tarmacadam highway for watercourse.

A further two swans were found on the previous Saturday with legs girdled with angling gear. The first had a fishing float and long length of cord wrapped round a leg and trailing behind for several yards. We placed the swan in a pen at King's Staithe; only the rebel sneaked out of a gap in the makeshift fence. Paul later found her ashore and in a team effort the cord was all unwound.

The second swan had a hook piercing her foot, with attached silvered rubbery fish lure. Paul expertly cut the hook off with the help of a visiting couple who kindly helped calm the bird. On both occasions the swans stepped out of the river to feed on the bank. This saved a lot of time and hassle manoeuvring a boat to aid capturing the waterfowl.
